عبدالجبار نام کا مطلب "خدا کا بندہ" ہوتا ہے۔ یہ نام عربی زبان سے اردو میں آیا ہے۔ "عبد" کا مطلب "بندہ" ہوتا ہے جبکہ "الجبار" اللہ تعالیٰ کے 99 ناموں میں سے ایک ہے جس کا مطلب "قادر ہر چیز کو ٹھیک کرنے والا" ہوتا ہے۔
قرآن میں بھی "الجبار" اللہ تعالیٰ کے ناموں میں آیا ہے۔ اس کا ذکر سورہ الحشر کے آیت نمبر 22 میں ملتا ہے:
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّوسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيزُ الْجَبَّارُ الْمُتَكَبِّرُ ۚ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
