From OIC to the World: Pakistan’s Role & Work in Promoting International Cooperation

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization consisting of 57 member states most of which are Muslim-majority countries. Its purpose is to promote solidarity and cooperation among its members and to advance the interests of the Muslim world. Pakistan has played a significant role in the OIC since its inception in 1969 and continues to be an active member today. Here are some key aspects of Pakistans role in the OIC:

Leadership: Pakistan has played a leadership role in the OIC since its establishment. In 1974 Pakistans then-Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto played a key role in convening the Islamic Summit Conference in Lahore which resulted in the adoption of the Lahore Declaration a landmark document that affirmed the importance of Islamic unity and solidarity. Since then Pakistan has hosted several OIC summits and has held key positions within the organization including serving as the OIC Secretary-General from 2004 to 2009.

Advocacy for Muslim Causes: Pakistan has been a strong advocate for the rights and interests of Muslims around the world within the OIC. Pakistan has spoken out on issues such as the Palestine-Israel conflict the plight of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. Pakistan has also been a vocal supporter of Muslim causes in international forums such as the United Nations.

Economic Cooperation: The OIC has a strong economic focus and Pakistan has played a significant role in promoting economic cooperation among its member states. Pakistan has worked with other OIC countries to promote trade investment and technology transfer among member states. In 2015 Pakistan hosted the 42nd OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Islamabad which focused on enhancing economic cooperation among OIC member states.

Cultural and Educational Exchange: The OIC promotes cultural and educational exchange among its member states and Pakistan has been active in this area. Pakistan has hosted several OIC-sponsored cultural and educational events including the Islamic Solidarity Games in Islamabad in 1989 and the OIC Youth Capital program in Karachi in 2013. In 1978 Pakistan hosted the first Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Conference which focused on developing a joint strategy to combat terrorism. Pakistan has also contributed troops to peacekeeping missions in several OIC member states including Somalia and Sudan.

Humanitarian Assistance: The OIC has played a key role in providing humanitarian assistance to Muslim communities affected by conflicts and natural disasters. Pakistan has been an active participant in these efforts providing financial and material assistance to OIC-sponsored relief efforts in countries such as Syria Yemen and Somalia. In 2010 Pakistan also played a key role in coordinating relief efforts for flood victims in Pakistan with support from OIC member states.

Religious Affairs: The OIC also has a focus on promoting Islamic religious affairs and Pakistan has played a role in this area as well. Pakistan has established several Islamic institutions in other OIC member states including the International Islamic University Malaysia and the International Islamic University of Islamabad. Pakistan has also hosted several conferences and workshops on Islamic religious affairs including the International Conference on Islamic Education in 2016.

Womens Empowerment: The OIC has made efforts to promote womens empowerment in member states and Pakistan has played a role in these efforts. Pakistan has hosted several OIC-sponsored conferences on womens rights and gender equality including the OIC Womens Conference in Islamabad in 2017. Pakistan has also established several womens empowerment initiatives such as the Benazir Income Support Program which provides financial assistance to low-income women.
